What would happen if something gigantic hit a black hole?

A black hole's gravity is extemely powerful well outside the event horizon. If if the larger object were travelling extremely fast, I would expect a lot of it to be devoured with the resulting energy heating the other pieces to extremely high temperature so you'd see an explosion in every direction.
